In general, I have been surprised at how few people have appreciated the unique research opportunities presented by our existing preserved areas. Too much of our wildlife research today is ad hoc and superficial.... Too frequently have we set a brilliant mind onto a cow path instead of steering it onto the high trails that lead into the wilderness behind us. To take a brilliant young student with a straight A average and put him to doing some plebian research task is a wicked waste of a good mind.
